Australia got complete control of the 2nd test match as they compiled a big lead over Sri Lanka. The hosts have a lead of 284 runs. The day assumed with Australia at 50 for the loss of 3 wickets. Clarke, who has a wonderful 2012 made 106 runs to surpass Ricky Ponting as the highest runs scorer by an Australian in tests in a calendar year. He has so far, scored 1595 runs this year that includes a record four double centuries. He is fourth highest runs scorer in tests in a calendar year. Clarke and Watson made 194 runs partnership in which Watson contributed 83 runs. However, he was once again unable to score century when he was caught out.

Although two quick wickets fell in a short span of time, Michael Hussey and Johnson added 61 precious runs to increase the lead. However, Hussey was caught from a classic one handed catch by Herath. Mitchell Johnson is still at the crease at 73. The hosts have two wickets left on the third day of their first innings. The scoreboard is as follows:
