Defending Davis Cup champions Czech Republic reached the semi final of the Davis cup after Lukas Rosol defeated Evgeny Korolev of Kazakhstan 7-6 6-7 7-6 6-2 on Sunday and as a result, gave his team a 3-1 lead. The match lasted for nearly four hours and both the players grinded out each other before Rosol’s experience and stamina prevailed. The tie was played on indoor clay courts in Astana, Kazakhstan. Earlier on Saturday, Kazakhstan prevented straight loss elimination when Andrey Golubev and Yuri Schukin defeated Jan Hajek and Radek Stepanek 7-6(2), 6-4, 6-3 in the doubles match and reduced the deficit to 2-1. Czech players had won both the first singles rubbers on Friday. The two nations had also played against each other a couple of years ago but the results were different as Kazakhstan caused upset by defeating Czechs 3-2.
Its an achievement for the Czech team to qualify for the semi final as it had a weak team compared to the last time due to the absence of Tomas Berdych who had injured his shoulder. As a result, Rosol was the highest ranked player in the squad. With the qualification for the semi final of the Davis cup, Czech republic has become world number 1 nation in ITF rankings. Czech team captain Jaroslav Navratil praised the efforts of the team especially Rosol who had a very difficult situation in which he was never before.
Czechs will play the semi final in September against either France or Argentina. Till Saturday, Argentina was leading the tie 2-1 as Horacio Zeballos and David Nalbandian beat Julien Benneteau and Michael Llodra 3-6, 7-6(3), 7-5, 6-3. But on Sunday, France came back strongly to level the tie 2-2 when Jo-Wilfried Tsonga defeated Juan Monaco of Argentina 6-3, 6-3, 6-0. The tie is being played on outdoor clay courts in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The semi finalist against Czech will now be decided on the result of match between Giles Simon and Carlos Berlocq. France have won the Davis Cup 9 times.
