Federer Posts Easy Win; Nadal Makes Winning Hard Court Comeback


Four time BNP Paribas Open Masters 1000 champion and current World No 2 Roger Federer of Switzerland defeated Denis Istomin 6-2, 6-3. The win was Federer’s 40th at the event, his fourth against Istomin in four meetings. Federer will play Ivan Dodig of Croatia in the third round. Dodig defeated Julien Benneteau of France 6-4, 6-2.


In another match, former World Number 1 Rafael Nadal of Spain defeated Ryan Harrison of America 7-6(3), 6-2. It was Nadal’s first match on hard court after last year’s Sony Ericsson Open in end March. Both Nadal and Federer are leaders in ATP masters 1000 events wins, with 21 titles apiece. In the third round, Nadal will face Leonardo Mayer of Argentina who defeated Mikhail Youzhny of Russia 6-2, 6-3. World Number 6 Tomas Berdych of Czech defeated qualifier from Germany Mischa Zverev 6-2, 6-4. He will play Florian Mayer of Germany who beat David Goffin of Belgium 6-4, 6-2.

The match of the day was between Gilles Simon of France and Paolo Lorenzi of Italy. The match went the distance and the Italian was leading 5-1 in the final set when Simon went on to win six straight games to win the match. Lorenzi was serving for the match at 5-2. Simon saved two match points to break his opponent and in his next service game, he saved another match point. The final score was 6-3, 3-6, 7-5. The upset of the day came when Ernests Gulbis of Latvia defeated World Number 9 Janko Tipsarevic 6-2, 6-0. Gulbis has recently won Delray Beach Tennis Championships. In the third round, Gulbis will play Andreas Seppi of Italy who defeated Daniel Brands of Germany 7-5, 6-4. World Number 10 Richard Gasquet of France overcame rising star Bernard Tomic of Australia 7-6(1), 6-2.
