The year 2012 was an important year for the tech Giant Microsoft. Besides launching Windows 8 with support of number of smartphone makers and carriers the year was full of event and achievements for it.After the successful launch and promotion of Windows 8,Microsoft did well to attract users to buy the smartphones like Nokia Lumia 9200,Samsung Ativ V and HTCX. However,the biggest challenge was to drive developers to write applications for this new platform.
Microsoft’s Windows Marketplace Senior Director for Todd Brix in a statement revealed that the number of windows application presently available is biggest in number ever since the launch of Windows Phone 7 in 2010. The overall figure of Microsoft certified applications and games are over 75,000 in 2012, roughly doubling the total number of available applications and games over the year. The total number of published updates were also well over 300,000.
On average each Microsoft Windows Phone user has downloaded 54 applications. However, the exact figure weather these were free or paid apps is still not clear. Brix also commented that the use of some search features of Bing to Microsoft has added more flexibility for users to download applications.
Brix also notes that developer revenue is already raised up by 40% since the Windows Phone 8 SDK release in the last 30 days.
Although a lot of consumers and developers are attracted towards new windows 8 platform but still Microsoft share is smartphone market hovers around 2.6 per cent.
