Sri Lanka Post Huge Total ; Bangladesh Resist


For the tenth time in test cricket, three Sri Lankan batsmen scored centuries to post a huge total in the first innings of first test against Bangladesh in Galle. Thirimanne, Chandimal and Sangakkara were the three batsmen to score centuries and take the total to 570 runs. The total is Sri Lanka’s second highest test score and makes it the fifth time that the Lankans have scored 500 plus runs against Bangladesh.

The day started with Thirimanne and Matthews on crease with 74 and 25 runs respectively. The total of Sri Lanka at the start of second day was 361 for the loss of three wickets. Matthews was the only wicket of the day who scored 27 runs and was aught and bowled by Abul Hasan. After the departure of skipper, Chandimal joined Thirimanne and started adding to the total. Bandlasesh had a chance to take his wicket but was dropped on 5 runs. Both the batsmen then played cautiously especially Thirimanne when he was in nineties. Finally, he scored his maiden century on 193 balls. He along with Chandimal had an unbreakable partnership of 203 runs that saw him score his maiden century as well. Chandimal remained not out on 116 runs while Thirimanne scored 155 runs. The trademark of Chandimal’s innings was his run rate with which he scored the runs. The quick century helped Sri Lanka get past 550 and declare the innings to give Bangladesh a complete session to bat on the second day.


To chase a huge score Bangladesh had a quick start. The first wicket fell at score of 23 when Jahurul Islam was caught by keeper off Eranga’s delivery. However, Bangladesh was reliefed with the performance of Muhammad Ashraful. He played Mendis and the other bowlers with complete authority and scored 50 on just 67 deliveries. Anamul Haque was the 2nd wicket to fall when he was bowled out by Mendis. Mominul Haq was also confident against the Lankan quality bowlers. Both Mominl and Ashraful put a partnership of 70 runs. Bangladesh scored 135 runs for the loss of 2 wickets. The score board is as follows after 2 days of the 1st test:
