The Mercedes Cup played in Stuttgart, Germany after The Championships, Wimbledon has been a clay court event since its opening in 1898. The tournament will be played on grass courts from 2015 onwards. Mercedes Benz which was the tournament sponsor since 1979 will continue its support n sponsorship for the tournament.
The tournament director had applied to the ATP for shifting the event after Roland Garros and before Wimbledon and for holding the event on grass court from 2015 onwards as ATP had earlier announced three weeks gap between Roland Garros and Wimbledon grand slams. ATP Executive Chairman Brad Drewett confirmed the approval of application submitted by the tournament organizers and has given go ahead to arrange the event on grass court. He expressed his confidence about the success of the event as it was in the past.
Mercedes Cup director Edwin Weindorfer thanked ATP for trusting his team and the tournament by awarding it a grass court event. The grass on the courts will be laid under supervision of experts of Wimbledon. Chief Executive of the All England Club Richard Lewis also welcomed the Mercedes Cup for joining the grass events club which includes AEGON Championships at Queen’s Club, Gerry Weber open in Halle, Germany, AEGON international tournament in Eastbourne, the ‘s-Hertogenbosch open in Netherlands and Hall of Fame tennis championships in Newport. He expressed his full cooperation and support in establishing the facility of world class tennis event.
