The opponents of Britain in the world group play offs has been confirmed. The team will play Croatia in an away tie to be played from 13-15 September, 2013. If Britain manages to win the tie, it will qualify for the Davis Cup World Group next year to be played by elite 16 teams. Britain defeated Russia in the Group I Europe/African Zone. Britain won the tie 3-2 as world number 217 James Ward and number 325 Dan Evans won their singles rubbers to win for the first time in 83 years from two rubbers to love down. It is after almost 5 years that the team will play a tie for the World group. .
Britain was relegated from World Group in 2010 to Group I and the next year to Group II when Scot Smith became team captain. The team survived relegation to Group III by defeating Turkey in 2011. The next year, team GB returned to Group I. Due to his commitments in single’s circuit, Murray did not play both the ties last year as well as the current one against Russia. However, he confirmed his availability for his country in the Davis Cup World Group play off in September.
Croatia has been in the World Group of Davis Cup for 11 times in last 12 years. World Number 11 Marin Cilic and Ivan Dodig are the two singles players. They are in a position where a loss to Britain could relegate them to Group I. Croatia lost to Italy 3-2 in the first round of Davis Cup world group played in February.
So far, the venue for the tie has not been announced. With Murray in the team, it is expected that Britain will be able to make it to the top 16 teams of the world group next year.
