Top seed and World Number 1 Novak Djokovic of Serbia defeated World Number 6 and third seed Tomas Berdych of Czech 7-5, 6-3 to win his fourth title at Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships. It was Djokovic’s 36th career title and 18th consecutive match win. The last time he lost a match was against Sam Querrey in the second round of BNP Paribas Masters on 31 October 2012.
It was Berdych who started strongly, breaking Djokovic serve in the fifth game. But the Serb struck back immediately to level at 4-4. Berdych squandered three break points in the next game and later paid the price as Djokovic broke his serve in the 12th game to take the opening set. In the second set, both players held serve till the seventh game. Djokovic stepped up in the eighth game to break and later served for the match. It was 12th consecutive hard court loss to Berdych at the hands of Djokovic.
Djokovic was also the winner at the event in 2009 (d. Ferrer), 2010 (d. Youzhny) and 2011 (d. Federer). With the win, he earned 500 ATP Rankings points. He was the first Czech player to reach Dubai final since Jiri Novak in 2003. He was also runner up at Open 13 in Marseille a week ago where he lost to Tsonga.
